The visual essay of Karel Martens’ studio conveys an
idea of a continuous project, of on-going learning from an
accumulation of past experiments with forms and color, of found images and objects and the work of others.The lessons of this learning process might not reveal themselves in the most conventional manner, but we can see that they participate directly in Martens’ process of building his new forms and sounding out his language of design. A wall above a work desk has a dense collage of prints, posters, typographic samples, notes, objects.There is a productive energy in the space between all these forms, where relationships between images, type specimens and other printed forms are active and generative.
