Released in 2008, idea No. 329 is the first major special issue on Herb Lubalin since 1969.
Particular focus is given to Lubalin’s art direction developed through his collaborations with the visionary editor Ralph Ginzburg, especially in the magazines Eros, Fact, and Avant Garde. While these works are often referenced individually, this issue offers an unusually comprehensive examination.
The feature spans nearly 70 pages and includes extensive type specimens of Lubalin’s groundbreaking typefaces, ranging from Avant Garde Gothic to Lubalin Graph and Serif Gothic, highlighting his innovative approach to typography and editorial design.
In addition, this oversized issue contains a substantial special feature on the possibilities of new typefaces, with works designed by Alan Fletcher, a founding member of Pentagram, as well as Karl Gerstner.
This section is accompanied by a critical essay by Helmut Schmid, who also edited and designed the feature himself.
Taken as a whole, idea No. 329 stands as an exceptionally valuable design reference, bringing together editorial design, typographic innovation, and critical reflection within a single, highly informative issue.
