This is a set of 4 Direct Mail pieces produced for an exhibition held in 1996 at the COMME des GARÇONS flagship store in Minami-Aoyama by Yukio Nakagawa (1918–2012), a central figure in the development of avant-garde “Ikebana”, the experimental and contemporary evolution of Japanese flower arrangement.
The design was created by BEANS, the studio led by Tsuguya Inoue.
Across the 4 pieces, vertical Japanese typesetting and horizontal Latin alphabet typography are combined in ways that cannot be achieved through Latin typography alone, reflecting a distinctive characteristic of Japanese graphic design. All 4 designs are unique, each realized through different typographic compositions and layouts.
