On this special issue
What began as an initial idea—to introduce the “Höschg” Basel in a series of consecutive sections—eventually developed into this special issue. Since the founding of the magazine, TM SGM and the Höhere Schule für Gestaltung Basel have maintained a close relationship.
Emil Ruder has contributed significant articles to the magazine again and again since the 1950s, and his ideas have guided many typographers along their paths.
Robert Büchler worked for many years as an author and was an insightful, critical member of the editorial committee.
Fortunately, this tradition has continued. Contributors such as André Gürtler, Heinrich Fleischhacker, and Wolfgang Weingart have given the magazine its distinctive character, and through their work on the editorial committee, they have helped ensure that our magazine is recognized both in Switzerland and abroad.
This special issue, spanning 64 pages, is dedicated to the entire department of Visual Communication at the Höhere Schule für Gestaltung Basel.
It allows readers to experience the diversity of educational goals and areas of focus that shape the future profession of the “Visueller Gestalter HFG.”
We look forward to continuing to present projects and works from the demanding curriculum at the Basel School to our readers in the future.

History of TM

Typographische Monatsblätter (Typographic Monthly Sheets), TM, was founded in 1933 by the ‘‘Schweizerischer Typographenbund, Bern’’ (Swiss Typographic Society, Bern).

In October 1932, a sample issue with a silver cover (known as the “silver issue”) was published. Its title was: ’’Typographische Monatsblätter zur Förderung der Berufsbildung’’ (Typographic Monthly Journal for the Promotion of Vocational Training).

In 1948, TM merged with the French-Swiss magazine ‘‘Revue suisse de l’Imprimerie’’ (Swiss Printing Journal), RSI. Founded in 1923 by Emile Guggi, Lausanne, under the name ’‘Revue suisse de l’Imprimerie et des Industries annexes’’ (Swiss Journal of Printing and Related Industries).

In 1952, TM merged with the magazine ‘‘Schweizer Grafische Mitteilungen’’ (Swiss Graphic Communications), SGM. Founded in 1882 by Rudolf K. Schneider, Zurich.

TM was always published by a workers’ union, whose name changed several times as a result of mergers. From 1933 to 1974 it was published by the ‘‘Schweizerischer Typographenbund’’ (Swiss Typographers’ Union), from 1975 to 1998 by the ‘‘Gewerkschaft Druck und Papier’’ (Printing and Paper Workers’ Union), from 1999 to 2010 by the ‘‘Gewerkschaft Comedia’’ (Comedia Union), and from 2011 to 2014 by the ‘‘Gewerkschaft Syndicom’’ (Syndicom Union).

The last four issues were published in 2014, after that the magazine was discontinued.

The english title was ‘‘Swiss Typographic Monthly Magazine’’ or ‘‘Swiss Typographic Magazine’’, STM.

『Typographische Monatsblätter』（タイポグラフィック・マンスリー・シート）は、1933年にベルンのスイス・タイポグラフィック協会によって創刊されました。
1932年10月、銀色の表紙の見本号（通称「シルバー号」）が発行されました。そのタイトルは『Typographische Monatsblätter zur Förderung der Berufsbildung』（職業訓練促進のためのタイポグラフィック・マンスリー・ジャーナル）でした。
1948年、TMはフランスとスイスの雑誌『Revue suisse de l’Imprimerie』（スイス印刷ジャーナル）RSIと合併しました。 1923年、エミール・グッジによりローザンヌで創刊。名称は「スイス印刷・関連産業ジャーナル」（Revue suisse de l’Imprimerie et des Industries annexes）です。
1952年、TMは雑誌「Schweizer Grafische Mitteilungen」（スイス・グラフィック・コミュニケーションズ）（SGM）と合併しました。SGMは1882年、チューリッヒでルドルフ・K・シュナイダーにより創刊されました。
