Confectionery, spirits, coffee or tobacco – our luxury goods are just as perishable as bread, cheese or butter, the articles of daily consumption. A significant part of human life is spent on their procurement, preparation, provision and consumption.

Although the packaging loses its meaning when the contents are consumed, it is often tougher and survives as a secondary element. The packaging then often carries on the memory of the contents for decades, centuries and, as the Greek pithoi show, even for millennia. If you assemble these containers, these casings in the form of bottles, cans, boxes, cartons or cassettes, a section of a peculiarly complex, flexible life, yet one with a touch of transience, unfolds, as if playing with marionettes. Packaging is a document of human existence par excellence; in its diverse forms it points beyond its immediate function to social and cultural forms of life. The history of product packaging in the 19th and 20th centuries is documented here on the basis of extensive public and private collections. The authors’ aim was to combine easily understandable texts with scientific apparatus. The result is a standard reference work that is aimed at graphic artists, designers, information and advertising specialists as well as teachers and all those interested in art and culture.
