Designed by 8vo, the London-based design studio who—on the recommendation of Wim Crouwel, then director of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen—began producing many of the museum’s publications during the 1980s and 1990s, this book was published in 1993 or 1994 in Rotterdam. It provides an overview of Donald Judd’s furniture works and includes the essay “It’s Hard to Find a Good Lamp.” In this essay, Judd recounts the difficulties he faced in finding suitable furniture for his home in Marfa, Texas, which led him to begin designing and making chairs and tables for the first time. He also reflects on the shortcomings of designer furniture, antique furniture, and mass-produced furniture, criticizing the high prices and limited accessibility of well-made pieces, while examining the essential distinctions between good and bad design.
In the design of many previous Boijmans catalogues by 8vo, an identity was established through the use of Futura, characterized by high-contrast typography and layouts that dynamically shifted and combined multiple columns. By contrast, this Donald Judd volume strongly conveys 8vo’s commitment to deeply engaging with Judd’s minimal grids and design sensibility. As such, the design of the book itself stands as an important reference for designers, equal in significance to its content.
