Gerald (Jerry) Cinamon (1930–2024) was a Boston-born book designer and typographer who built his career in the UK. Educated at the Massachusetts School of Art and Yale University—where he studied under figures including Josef Albers, Paul Rand and Armin Hofmann—he later continued his studies with Hofmann in Basel on a Fulbright Scholarship.
After working in New York, he moved to London in 1960 and designed for numerous publishers, most notably Penguin Books, where he became Chief Designer. His work combined the discipline of Swiss Modernism with a distinctly personal sense of wit and expression, evident in projects such as the Pelican History of Art series.
Beyond publishing, Cinamon designed for institutions including the British Film Institute and the BBC. He received multiple international awards and later authored major studies on Rudolf Koch and Emil Rudolf Weiss. In 2013, a retrospective exhibition, Gerald Cinamon: Collected Works, was held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
Cinamon’s work remains recognisable for its bold simplicity, bright colour, sharp composition and imaginative typography—rigorous yet never without playfulness.
