Design Quarterly 130 (1985), published by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, is a historically important issue dedicated to Armin Hofmann and Wolfgang Weingart. This issue, which can almost be considered a collaborative work between Hofmann and Weingart, is regarded as one of the most valuable publications for understanding modern Swiss typography.
Structured as a tête-bêche publication, one side contains Hofmann’s “Thoughts on the Study and Making of Visual Signs,” while the other features Weingart’s “My Typography Instruction at the Basle School of Design/Switzerland, 1968–1985.”
Hofmann’s section explores the foundations of visual structure, perception, and balance that formed the core of graphic design education at the Basel School. Weingart’s section documents his experimental typography teaching and student work from the 1960s through the 1980s, showing how he expanded and deconstructed the rigid order of Swiss Typography while still using it as a foundation.
The overall publication design was created by Lorraine Ferguson, while the covers on each side were designed respectively by Armin Hofmann and Wolfgang Weingart themselves.
Although both designers were primarily based in Basel, Switzerland, their teaching—particularly through Yale University’s summer programs—had a profound influence on American design education. As a result, this publication is widely regarded as a key bridge between Swiss Modernism and the emergence of New Wave typography.
