This is a spin-off edition of TM SGM RSI 3/1986 that contains only the Armin Hofmann feature, omitting all advertisements and regular editorial content from the original issue.
The cover design of this TM SGM RSI 3/1986 special issue was created by the Swiss typographer Heinz Hiltbrunner, and it remains one of my favorite TM covers from the post-1980 period.
What makes it particularly memorable is the subtle use of color behind the typography. The softly distressed, almost gradient-like color fields transform an otherwise extremely minimal composition into something unexpectedly organic. Combined with the tiny point-size Univers typography, the result is unlike anything I have seen elsewhere—restrained yet remarkably expressive.
This publication is a spin-off edition of TM SGM RSI 3/1986 containing only the Armin Hofmann feature, with all advertisements and regular editorial content removed from the original issue.
Beyond presenting Hofmann’s most significant work, the publication also explores his ideas and methodology as an educator. Particularly compelling is its observation that while Hofmann’s visual language was widely imitated by younger generations of designers around the world, the rigorous methodology and disciplined way of thinking behind that work were far less understood.
Hofmann was not merely a representative of the Swiss Style. He was an educator who taught observation, analysis, composition, and visual thinking itself. Rather than focusing on surface aesthetics, this publication examines the educational principles underlying his practice, making it an important document for understanding the foundations of modern graphic design.

TM誌の歴史
1882年にSGM誌がチューリヒのR.Scweizer氏によって創刊された。
1923年にはRSI誌がE.Guggiに氏により創刊。そして1933年、ベルンのスイスタイポグラフィ協会かTM(Typografische Monatsblatter)誌が創刊された。
1948年にTM誌とRSI誌が、さらに1952年にはSGM誌も加えた３誌TM誌に合併。
尚、出版社はComedia社であり、1981年のRudolf Hostettler氏の没後からは、Jean Pierre Graberが編集を手掛けている。現在はLucius Hartmannの編集の下で季刊ベースで発行されている。
