Wolfgang Weingart designed the annual covers for Typografische Monatsblätter (TM) in 1972 and 1973. Today, these legendary covers are among the most sought-after issues of the magazine, often selling out immediately whenever we offer them at PAGE SPREAD.
The cover for the 1974 volume, however, was not simply another pursuit of visual novelty or experimental form. In 1973, TM launched a competition inviting designers to submit concepts for the following year’s cover. The winning proposal retained the cover format established by Weingart, yet transformed it into something entirely different by incorporating the typewritten competition entry directly into the cover design. The result was an exceptionally conceptual approach.
What makes this cover remarkable is that it shifts the focus away from creating a new visual style and instead questions the very notion of what a magazine cover can be. Rather than foregrounding the personal expression of a designer, it visualizes ideas and ways of thinking, treating the design process itself as part of the final work. It stands as one of TM’s most conceptual cover designs, symbolizing the magazine’s editorial commitment to embracing diverse forms of expression and experimentation.

TM誌の歴史
1882年にSGM誌がチューリヒのR.Scweizer氏によって創刊された。
1923年にはRSI誌がE.Guggiに氏により創刊。そして1933年、ベルンのスイスタイポグラフィ協会かTM(Typografische Monatsblatter)誌が創刊された。
1948年にTM誌とRSI誌が、さらに1952年にはSGM誌も加えた３誌がTM誌に合併。
尚、出版社はComedia社であり、1981年のRudolf Hostettler氏の没後からは、Jean Pierre Graberが編集を手掛けている。現在はLucius Hartmannの編集の下で季刊ベースで発行されている。
