The direct mail collected here was sent seasonally for the past 10 years from the Comme des Garçons press room to fashion journalists, artists and stylists, or from the company-run stores in Tokyo, Paris and New York to customers around the world. The collections are rarely published in a straight lookbook format. They are often in the form of tornadoes, lines, salmon or baseball poles, and it is difficult to immediately gauge their appearance. In particular, the recent trend is that there is a lack of consistency. By the way, even for someone like me who does not check out the Paris Collection or rush to Colette when it appears in Aoyama, there is an unshakable image of Comme des Garçons being avant-garde. This image of a powerful nation that has spread widely (I think it is fair to say) even to those who are not that interested, and although it is consistent in these printed materials, there is no continuity in the design style when you look at each piece. Why? To always be avant-garde is to be avant-garde in the interim; in other words, one must always make different choices in order to achieve a universal image. To be inconsistent is to be flexible and unrestrained. I have the utmost respect for Comme des Garcons, who never wavers in their determination to keep changing.
