Just what’s is music? Of course it’s more than just couple of centuries of European musical history. What do we know about music? What are the laws governing music? Where lies its origin? We have very good reasons to study origin of man from the obscurity of the past. And that equally applies to music. But think of the gradual transition of the human voice to the instrument! This we do know : animal rhythm or celemonial hymns, dances of enchantment or incantations, the human voice alone could not sufficiently express all this.

The text for this Quadrat-Print was written in the beginning of 1958 by composer Ton de Leeuw, Born November 16, 1926 at Rotterdam. Besides his normal music education he mainly occupied himself with the study of musical ethnology and contemporary music. Was employed as musical producer with the Nederlandse Radio Unie (1954-59), and is now teaching at The Hague Conservatory (analysis), Amsterdam (analysis of contemporary music), and Utrecht (composition). Wrote chamber-music, orchestra music, choir music, music for stage, film and broadcasting purposes, radiophonic oratorio Job.

Quadrat Prints were a series of experimental graphic design publication edited by Pieter Brattinga and given away by the Hilversum printer de Jong from the early fifties to the mid-seventies. Each one was ten inches square, mostly several stapled pages but some were loose leaf sheets (this alphabet) in a box or folder.
