Henry Valentine Miller (December 26, 1891 – June 7, 1980) was an American writer and painter. He was known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new sort of “novel” that is a mixture of novel, autobiography, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism, one that is distinctly always about and expressive of the real-life Henry Miller and yet is also fictional.[1] His most characteristic works of this kind are Tropic of Cancer (1934), Black Spring (1936), and Tropic of Capricorn (1939). He also wrote travel memoirs and essays of literary criticism and analysis.

Graphic artist Ton Raatland designed this third ‘Written Language’, as h did the two previous publications bearing the same title, in the series of Quadrat-Prints; gained national and international recognition for his typographical compositions; received awards from foundation such as the ‘G.J. Thiemefonds’ and the ‘H.J.Werkman Prize’ awarded by the Municipality of Amsterdam; has been lecture at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Graphic & Sculptural Arts in The Hague since 1969; works as a free-lance designer in Amsterdam and is member of the Netherlands society of Graphic Designers(GVN).
Quadrat Prints were a series of experimental graphic design publication edited by Pieter Brattinga and given away by the Hilversum printer de Jong from the early fifties to the mid-seventies. Each one was ten inches square, mostly several stapled pages but some were loose leaf sheets (this alphabet) in a box or folder.

ニューヨーク州ニューヨーク市マンハッタン区にカトリックのドイツ系アメリカ人の家で生まれる。ブルックリン区ウィリアムズバーグで育つ。ニューヨーク市立大学シティカレッジ中退。
1931年、シカゴ・トリビューンでの仕事を得る。職業を転々としたのち、ヨーロッパを放浪。1934年、自伝的小説『北回帰線』をパリにて発表。しかし本国アメリカでは、その奔放な性表現により発禁になる（1964年、連邦最高裁にて「猥褻文書ではない」とする判決が下された）。
現在ミラーの書類はカリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校に保存されている。 著作集が各10巻で、1960年代に新潮社、21世紀に入り水声社（2008年12月現在7冊まで）刊行。

『Quadrat-Print／Kwadraat-Blad』はPieter Brattingaが代表を務めるオランダの印刷会社、de Jong社が広報用に制作し実験的な冊子です。各issueは2,000部ほど刷られていて、サイズは10″x10″で綴じてあるものもあれば簡易的に織り込まれているものもあります。
