The splendid monograph dedicated to the imperial villa of Katsura built between 1620 and 1647, for prince Toshihito as a residence of the countryside near Kyoto. The black and white photographs by Yasuhiro Ishimoto are accompanied by seedlings and preceded by two short essays: Architecure in Japan, Walter Gropius, and Tradition and creation in Japanese Architecture, Kenzo Tange. The graphic composition of the book is edited by Herbert Bayer. This is the first English-language edition, sponsored by the Yale University Press, but printed in Japan by Zokeisha Publications Ltd.

この桂の本は、この離宮のいわゆる記録ではないし、まして歴史家的な研究書でもその年代史的な記述でもない。またこの本の写真が示している桂は、現実に存在している桂そのものではないだろう。むしろこの本は一人の建築家と一人の写真家の心象のなかに生きている桂の記憶である。（丹下健三による序文より）
バウハウスの創立者であるワルター・グロピウスにより企画、1960年に刊行された写真集。石元泰博が撮影したモノクロ写真にグロピウス、丹下健三によるテキスト、図面等を添えて収録。レイアウト／装幀はハーバート（ヘルベルト）・バイヤーによるもの。
石元泰博
1921年6月14日、アメリカ・サンフランシスコに生まれる。3歳のとき両親の郷里である高知県に戻り、1939年高知県立農業高校を卒業。同年、単身渡米するが、間もなく太平洋戦争がはじまり、収容所生活を経験する。終戦後は、シカゴのインスティテュート・オブ・デザイン（通称、ニュー・バウハウス）で、写真技法のみならず、石元作品の基礎を成す造形感覚の訓練を積む。その後、桂離宮のモダニズムを写真により見出した作品で高い評価を受ける。丹下健三、菊竹清訓、磯崎新、内藤廣など日本を代表する建築家の作品を多く撮影してきたことでも知られる。
