Published in 1959, Gerstner+Kutter, Werbung Graphik Publizität is one of the earliest and most important publications documenting the ideas behind the newly established design office of Karl Gerstner and Markus Kutter in Basel. Rather than functioning as a conventional portfolio, the 20-page brochure presents their vision of advertising, graphic design, and publicity as an integrated system of communication.
At a time when advertising was still largely driven by illustration and stylistic expression, Gerstner and Kutter proposed a more rational approach based on structure, typography, and information. The publication marks the beginning of the thinking that would later develop into GGK (Gerstner, Gredinger + Kutter) and Gerstner’s influential concept of the “Design Programme,” in which visual identity is created through coherent systems rather than isolated graphic elements.
Although modest in size, this brochure is an important historical document that captures the origins of one of Switzerland’s most influential design partnerships and the emergence of modern communication design.
