Forty-three artists from Japan and abroad who new Yusaku Kamekura either as kindred spirits or mutually inspired rivals have created works and contributed essays in his memory. Although it was impossible to include all the many people who had a close rapport with him during his 65-year career, we hope the messages featured will offer a glimpse int the many different facets that together were Yusaku Kamekura.

He studied at the Institute of New Architecture and Industrial Arts in Tokyo, specializing in basic composition theory. Founding member (1960) and later director of Nippon Design Centre. Chairman of the Japan Graphic Designers Association. He was the art director of Nippon magazine, which introduced the country’s culture to the world.

Kamekura worked freelance from 1962. He was a great adherent of the International Typographic Style. The use of Japanese aesthetics, combined with geometric and linear forms and dramatic photography, enabled him to communicate effectively with an international audience.

His posters for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics were honoured with the Grand Prize of the Ministry of Education. Kamekura also acted as the design director for those Games. He received numerous awards and had international solo exhibitions. The Tokyo ADC honoured him with four gold, five silver and several bronze medals. He designed posters for Expo 70 (Osaka), Interski ’79 and Rayon and Synthetic Fibres of Japan (1961), the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics and Expo ’89 (Nagoya). An important client of his was Nikon Camera Company. Kamekura designed for advertising, corporate identities, symbols, books and packaging. Moreover he was an active writer on design.

昨年5月に急逝した亀倉雄策は、日本のグラフィックデザインの雄として、また世界のKAMEKURAとして、戦前戦後を通じて常にトップを走り続けてきました。本書は、その65年におよぶデザイナー人生を共に生き、今日のデザイン界を築きあげた43人による、追悼の意を込めた作品と、思い出のエッセイで構成されています。あわせて、亀倉雄策がその若き時代について書いた文章を、時代を追って再録しています。
