Images of historic Swiss posters are shared everywhere today, and even when we can match a design with the name of its designer, their powerful visual impact often draws us in almost instinctively. For younger generations in particular, individual works are often encountered as fragments of information, while the broader historical context and development behind them remain understood only in broad, intuitive terms.

This book offers an opportunity to look at the history of Swiss graphic design with a little more resolution. What makes it particularly interesting is that it does not define Swiss Style solely through formal characteristics such as grids and sans serif typography. Instead, it traces nearly half a century of change through a more specific question: how photography and type were combined to communicate information.

Hofmann treated photography as a form of “symbol”; Müller-Brockmann approached it as “objective information”; Odermatt & Tissi developed a more flexible relationship between image and type. Weingart then dismantled that order, using montage to layer photography and typography into a more intuitive and personal form of expression. Monguzzi meticulously restructured that complexity, while Jeker increasingly allowed photography itself to take center stage.

The latter part of the book also includes interviews with Siegfried Odermatt & Rosmarie Tissi, Wolfgang Weingart, and Bruno Monguzzi. Their responses to the same set of questions reveal not only differing approaches to photography and typography, but also distinct attitudes toward the design process, style, ethics, and the rapidly growing presence of computers at the time.

“Word + Image: Swiss Poster Design, 1955–1997” is the catalogue for an exhibition held at UMBC in the United States, tracing the development of postwar Swiss poster design through the relationship between photography and typography.
Essays by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo and Cynthia Wayne begin with the lineage of modernism—from the Bauhaus and Constructivism through Herbert Matter—and follow the International Typographic Style established in the 1950s as it was inherited, reinterpreted, and at times deliberately dismantled by subsequent generations. Rather than viewing familiar Swiss posters simply as examples of a style, the book allows us to reconsider them through the particular lens of “word + image,” and to understand more clearly the ideas that shaped them.

Book design by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo, with the text set in the Univers family. Published in a limited edition of 1,000 copies, the catalogue is known to exist with two cover designs, by Rosmarie Tissi and Bruno Monguzzi. Archival documentation also lists a cover by Wolfgang Weingart, although no physical copy has been confirmed so far. This copy features the cover designed by Rosmarie Tissi.
