Word #01

It is our task to give language form,
to lend it permanence and
to keep it that way.
We often do not realize that this task
is only accomplished through
the means of form.

We string the characters together
to form words and sentences,
pay heed to the method of composition,
be concerned that no mistakes
creep in, and in spite of all this we
encounter problems of form.

It is our task to give language form, to lend it permanence and to keep it that way.
We often do not realize that this task is only accomplished through the means of form.
We string the characters together to form words and sentences, pay heed to the method of composition, be concerned that no mistakes creep in, and in spite of all this we encounter problems of form.
Using the word ‘buch’ (book) we wish to observe more closely the mutual relationships of language and form.
In (1) one reads firstly the word ‘bush’ and only afterwards does one becomes aware of a shape. If we place the same line in an upwards direction (2),
then the shape appears to us more interesting, because straight away readability is made more difficult.
The line stood on its head (3) produces almost a pure shape, whose readability is questionable.
The mirror image of the line (4), well known to printers, becomes unreadable for the layman, who is only able to view it in a formal way.
But even a simple mixing up of the characters (5) makes the word unreadable and emphasizes its shape.
In the final example (6) the same characters are unexpectedly repositioned; the problem of form is self-evident.
We see straight and curved lines, which unite to form a graphic image devoid of linguistic meaning.

So it is understandable why we find foreign script so immensely appealing.
Its readability bars us from comprehension and we enjoy it purely as a work of art.
The Arabic cuneiform script from the time of the Samanid dynasty, 874 to 999, is full of power and beauty, comparable to the best works associated with free art.
The words of Allah from the Koran read: ‘The lord is the greatest, he who taught people to read and free them from ignorance.’
If we were able read these words, then, as a logical consequence, our interest in the form the script takes would become diminished.
As he saw the countless number of coloured lights on Broadway in New York for the first time the poet Chesterton called out: ‘That would be a fantastic magical garden for someone who is lucky enough not to be able to read!’

Helmut Schmid has wonderfully restructured the article in the idea 353 based on the article to be published in the October 1958 issue of “Typografische Monatsblatter” by Emil Ruder. So, we highly recommended that to be read the idea 353 thoroughly. And then you can get a deep understanding of this article.
