Volume and space relationships

The boundary between architecture and sculpture

Although architecture and sculpture are two quite separate domains,
treatment space may at times be confused with treatment of volume.
In other words: to the untrained eye a sculpture may appear as miniature architecture and works of architecture as enlarged sculptural works.
In fact the latter is almost always the case with the usual classical architecture where the modulation of masses, bodies (volumes),
were predominant.
Space creation in our time changes, however, the old meaning of architecture.
The following explanation will clarify this with a greater exactness.
If the side wall of a volume (clearly circumscribed body) are scattered in different directions, spacial pattern, spacial relationships originate.
This fact is the best guide for a judgement about new and pseudo-modern architecture.
The latter shows only volume articulation in comparison with the rich space articulation of an architecture of truly new spirit.

Volume and Space relationships.

If the side wall of a volume are scattered in different directions, spatial relationships originate.

This information is originated from the The New Vision by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy in part.
It’s strongly recommended that if you will read a The New Vision thoroughly, you are able to understand with this information on a more than superficial level.
