Rhythm #01-3

3.
Consciously designed rhythmic values

Until now we have assessed the means of achieving rhythm in typography as: the changing of shapes within the characters themselves,
word spaces, line breaks and the arrangement of lines. We can observe further degrees of rhythm taking place through the variations of type size, in the format the setting takes, in the size of the paper used and in its remaining white space, but this time through consciously applied means.

One of the most effective ways of achieving rhythm in a typographic piece of work lies in the variations of type size. A large type size appears in size and blackness as an enrichment, additionally it remains in most
cases a part-element of the setting.

The larger size used in (13) is hardly recognizable as such; the rhythmic progression from large to small is too weak and uncertain.

The variation in size in (14) is clearly recognizable; the larger size stands out from the surroundings and the proportional increase in weight guarantees its difference. But we find this particular size correct and any reduction would diminish the clarity of its effect.

The hefty size in (15) dominates clearly over its surroundings; the rhythmic progression from large to small and light to dark is sharp and succinct. The larger size would even allow for the insertion of a third value. that is, the addition of a size between that of the large size and that of the text. If we then regard different type size as a useful means towards achieving rhythm there is
a recommendation here not to throw caution to the wind, if we do not wish to fall back to the style of the inglorious past.

3.

Of all formats the square has the most uniform rhythm. Its circumference produces an evenness of all four distances; the rhythm lies in the proportions of 1:1:1:1. Within this symmetrical paper format we will place a vertically emphasized piece of text with a strong narrow-wide rhythm (16). The result is a correlation between symmetry (the paper format) and non-symmetry (the text).

The text in (17) is placed higher still, additionally, it is split into smaller and larger values. The rhythmic contrast between paper format and text has become more distinct and by this means the setting itself is again rhythmatized.

Helmut Schmid has wonderfully restructured the article in the idea 354 based on the article to be published in the April 1959 issue of “Typografische Monatsblatter” by Emil Ruder. So, we highly recommended that to be read the idea 354 thoroughly. And then you can get a deep understanding of this article.
