Already years ago, the German artist Gerhard Merz (born 1947) placed “Ed io anche sono architetto” (And I am also an architect) on one of his script-pictures.
A generous builder in Hartha near Dresden offered him the chance to realize his architectonic ideas of body, space, and light as a union of classical simplicity and repetition as well as pure material and highest technical perfection. In a combined office and warehouse structure the relentless aesthete places measure and number, proportion and clarity, geometry and symmetry against the arbitrariness and thoughtlessness of building today. This volume documents the building, completed in 1997, with a photo sequence by Jörg von Bruchhausen and a text by Ute Riese.
