The exhibition brings letters from the 1940s to the first years of the 21st century, that have been posted by graphic designers, typographers, font designers and publishers. They will be shown less because of their content, but because of their signature. These are manuscripts whose writers with the writing reform of the Englishman Alfred Fairbank (1895-1982) employed and have formed their own handwritten expression after its templates.

In the late 19th century, the English Arts and Crafts movement for a renewal of all the branches of the applied arts began; Crafted to replace the industrial products produced mechanically as far as possible. In this tradition, Alfred Fairbank created after 1921 the foundations for the later named after him handwriting reform.
With “A Handwriting Manual” he published in 1932 the first comprehensive presentation of his ideas. Important properties such as writing with the broad nib, the emphasis of over- and under-lengths and a slight slant to the right characterize the “Fairbank’sche model”.

Presented in the exhibition letters from Alfred Fairbank, Anna Hornby, Paul Standard, Jan van Krimpen, Jan Tschichold, Hans Schmoller, Max Caflisch and Gerrit Noordzij and other Walter Kaech, Rudolf Hostettler, Jost Hochuli and Jan Tschichold show the reception of schriftreformerischen ideas Alfred Fairbanks and demonstrate the diversity of implementation.

The exhibition includes about 40 letters that come from a private collection of about 400 handwritten letters. curated the exhibition by the Swiss artist and book designer Jost Hochuli.

Jost Hochuli監修のもとで、1940年から今世紀にかけての歴史上はずせないグラフィックデザイナー、タイポグラファー、書体デザイナー、出版者たちによる手書きの手紙を紹介したものです。
